More than a museum. A place that moves you.

Gain new perspectives at the Alpinarium Galtür

An avalanche protection wall transformed into a cultural space. A valley that remembers and looks ahead. Just a few minutes from the Hotel Seespitz, the Alpinarium Galtür is a place that stays with you.

More than Ischgl. Home of enriching experiences.

Some places are worth visiting. Others stay with you long afterwards. The Alpinarium Galtür is one of them. From the outside, it appears to be part of a vast avalanche protection wall. Step inside, however, and you will discover one of the most extraordinary cultural spaces in the Alps. Built in the wake of the devastating avalanche of 23 February 1999, which claimed 31 lives, the 345-metre-long and 19-metre-high structure became far more than a protective barrier. It also became a place of remembrance, reflection, and understanding. Its pale alabaster façade, glowing like fresh snow, symbolically recalls the event that changed Galtür forever.

“Ganz oben”: stories of Galtür and the wider world
At the heart of the Alpinarium lies the permanent exhibition “Ganz oben” (“At the very top”). Across five relationship worlds, it invites you on a journey through striking contrasts: beginning and end. Above and below. People and mountains. Mirrored spatial capsules, carefully staged exhibits, a dedicated cinema showing the documentary about the avalanche year of 1999 – each room reveals, in its own way, what it means to live in the Alps. In the memorial room Memento, a triptych by Galtür artist Arthur Salner commemorates the 31 avalanche victims. It is a quiet, contemplative space that invites you to pause.

Panorama, climbing, and café moments
Yet the Alpinarium is much more than a museum. From the rooftop viewing platform, a 360° panorama opens up across the surrounding mountains, including peaks such as the Ballunspitze and the Gorfen. If you are in the mood for movement after your visit, the indoor climbing wall offers a sporty change of pace. Prefer to slow down instead? Then settle into Café Gefrorenes Wasser and let the impressions of the day sink in.

The Alpinarium is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with last admission at 5:00 p.m. From Ischgl, it is only a short drive away – yet the world you enter feels far removed, and all the more memorable.
