Discovering the quiet beauty of Tyrol’s winter
Away from the slopes: winter hiking in Ischgl
You know the Silvretta Arena ski slopes inside out. But winter in Paznaun has another side, too – quieter, wider, wonderfully unhurried. A world where the crisp mountain air invites you to breathe deeper, and the snow-covered landscape gently reminds you to pause.
Beyond Ischgl. A journey of serene moments.
Winter hiking around the Hotel Seespitz means setting out for new horizons – leaving behind the bustle of the ski slopes and heading deep into Tyrol’sunspoilt Alpine world. With over 100 kilometres of marked winter hiking trails, Paznaun invites you to savour wide-open panoramas, quiet forest paths, and that blissful feeling of being fully present in the moment.
Here are three winter hikes we especially recommend for your own journey of discovery beyond the ski slopes:
#1 Winter hiking trail: Ischgl – Mathon
Day hike | approx. 1.5 hours | easy
A relaxed route from the Silvretta car park across snowy fields and through open woodland to the village of Mathon. The mostly flat trail follows the Trisanna, running partly alongside the cross-country ski trail, and is ideal for families and anyone looking for a gentle winter walk with minimal exertion. In Mathon, you can either retrace your steps or return to Ischgl on the opposite side of the valley, following the river.
#2 Winter hiking trail to Mutta
Loop | approx. 1.5–2 hours | easy to intermediate
Starting at the Silvretta Therme, this circular route winds its way uphill in gentle switchbacks through snow-dusted forest. At the high point, you’re rewarded with beautiful views across Ischgl to the surrounding peaks – a perfect spot for a short pause before you loop back to where you started.
#3 The Verwall panoramic hike
Loop | approx. 4 hours | intermediate
This longer trail, for experienced winter hikers, begins at the Mathon car park and leads up to a spectacular viewpoint below the Friedrichshafen mountain hut. The ascent is more demanding – and more rewarding, with one-of-a-kind views over the Silvretta and Samnaun ranges.
Staying safe on your winter hike
Even on groomed winter hiking trails, we recommend sturdy, warm footwear – and depending on conditions, crampons or snowshoes. Before you set off, be sure to check the current conditions and any trail closures. Our reception team will be happy to assist with the latest information.
